How to care for your Christmas tree

  • Tree-t your Christmas Tree like its a big flower

Real Christmas trees continue to drink water after they have been harvested. If they are kept in a cool place out of the sun and provided with fresh water they should last at least 4 weeks. To make your tree last as long as possible:

One of market operators should cut the bottom off of the tree when you buy it in the morning. We don’t just do it for fun! This stops the sap from sealing over the trunk and blocking water from getting in. If you have to leave your tree for more than 5 hours before hanging we recommend cutting the base off again to allow the tree to soak up heaps of water.

Place the tree in a stand that can hold at least 2 litres of water. You should expect the tree to take up additional water. Water the new tree until water uptake stops. We supply stands at our markets that are perfect for this.

Always keep the base of the tree in water. If the base dries out, resin will form over the cut end and the tree will not be able to absorb water. This can cause the tree to dry out very quickly. You don’t need anything other than regular tap water – drying out deters future water uptake and will need a new cut.

Take down the tree before it dries out. Many fresh cut trees if properly cared for (using the first five steps) should last at least four weeks before drying out. Some species keep their moisture longer than others.

The Lifecycle of your Christmas Tree

  • Planting

This is the time when we plant our Christmas Trees. They start at less than 10cm tall and will need four more years of love and nurturing before being ready for your home.

  • Topping

At the age of 1 year, the sapling is now ready for topping. This involves cutting the top off to promote the tree to grow wide, bushy and dense. this will occur in a years time again

  • Pruning

The Christmas Tree is now 3 years old. in this time it has reached 1.2m and is starting to get thicker. By Pruning our tree with a Hedge trimmer we stunt the trees growth and allow the tree to get bushier

  • Harvesting

The tree is now around 1.8m tall and is ready for Harvest. We cut it down and take it to your local market, ready to find the perfect Christmas Home.
